Scream 3 is the 2000 sequel to slasher blockbusters Scream and Scream 2. Wes Craven returns once again to direct the third installment of the series. Kevin Williamson did not return as writer of this entry and was replaced by Ehren Kruger.
Cotton Weary, the man wrongly convicted of killing Sidney's mother, is killed in his home along with his girlfriend. The killer wears the infamous Ghostface costume and just as he brings the knife down into Cotton's chest a final time, he remarks, 'you should have told me where Sidney is'. Gale and Dewey are contacted by a detective working the case to see if they can identify a picture left at the scene. Gale recognizes the girl in the photo as Maureen Prescott, Sidney's mother. After an actress is murdered while working on 'Stab 3: Return to Woodsboro", both Gale and Dewey realize the killer is killing people in the order they die in the script. That would make protecting the victim easy, except for the fact that there are three different scripts and they have no idea which the killer read.
In a secluded area of California, Sidney Prescott is living a life of seclusion, having changed her name and withdrawn herself from everyone but Dewey after the events of Scream 2. But she is no longer safe there, for the killer begins calling her again. That same night Gale, Dewey, and cast from the movie are gathered at cast member's house. While there Dewey realizes that the photo of Maureen and a head shot left laying on the counter were taken in the same location, the back lot of the studio where Stab 3 is being filmed. It doesn't take long for the killer to show up at the house and begin taunting them. After dispatching a bodyguard the killer blows up the house, leaving only Gale, Dewey, and two cast members alive.
The next day Sidney arrives at the police station where Gale and Dewey are informing the detective about the attack the night before. Sidney tells Dewey that the killer has found her and that's why she's come back. John Milton the producer of Stab 3 decides to throw a cast party inviting the remaining cast as well as Gale and Dewey. As the guests separate trying to find a secret room that is rumored to exist in Milton's old house, Gale and Dewey realize that the killer tricked them into attending the party. Soon after this realization, the killer begins murdering all the remaining cast members but not Gale and Dewey, it seems he has other plans for them. While at the police station, Sidney gets a call from the killer telling her he has captured Gale and Dewey and demands for her to come to Milton's house or they will die. Sidney arrives at the old house a short time later. As She finds Gale and Dewey tied up in the living room as she tries to free them the killer attacks her and she shoots him. After looking away for a moment she turns back to find his body missing. As she frees Gale and Dewey the killer reappears and chases her into the secret room the guests were looking for. Having her trapped with no means of escape the killer finally explains his story and how he has been responsible for all the murders even the ones from the first movie. A fight ensues between the two of them and it is finally revealed who the killer really is.
