Opera is a 1987 Italian giallo film written and directed by Dario Argento. The film stars Cristina Marsillach, Urbano Barberini, and Ian Charleson. Cinematography is done by Ronnie Taylor while Brian Eno and Claudio Simonetti composed the film's score. The film was released in the United States under the title Terror at the Opera.
Argento's 1987 masterpiece centers around a young, unconfident Opera Singer, Betty. After the lead in Verdis's Macbeth is killed in an auto accident, she is immediately and relucktently thrust into the lead of the opera. Much to her chagrin, she is ultimately coaxed to replace the lead. The protaganist in this film is the police inpector played by Urbano Barberini, very effectively. What made this particular Argento film, stand out is the method of the killer and effective special effects. The Killer binds and in a shocking manner for it's time, circa 1987, place tape under her eyelids with needles so she (Betty), is unable to blink and therefore, forced to watch as the inspector kills her fellow crew members of the opera-but does not harm her at these points in time.
