Maniac is a 1980 American slasher/splatter film, about a disturbed and traumatized serial killer who scalps his victims. It was directed by William Lustig and written by Joe Spinell.
Frank Zito is an Italian-American serial murderer, middle-aged, overweight loner and Vietnam veteran living in an unspecified borough of New York City, where he works as the landlord of a small apartment complex. Unbeknown to his tenants, Frank is a schizoid serial killer who spends his nights stalking and killing women, scalping them and bringing the scalps and their clothing back home to decorate his steadily growing supply of mannequins. Once a mannequin has been decorated to his satisfaction, Frank sleeps with it for several nights, using them to carry on one-sided conversations with his deceased mother, an abusive prostitute who subjected him to years of physical abuse before dying in a car accident and leaving him orphaned. Inexplicably, after several nights, Frank grows tired of each mannequin, posing them around different parts of his apartment before seeking out another victim.

I love this movie... Mostly because of Tom Savini.

I watch this with Firestar last night on youtube (check out the youtube section on this site) and I must say this film still stands up. This is the best example of a Slasher film from the era of those types of films. Many Slasher movies, particularly those made in the 1980s bare the stain of the 80s upon the film itself, many of them are slightly over the top, whether its the use of humor, fashion and musical trends, and other elements normally associated with those years. Maniac has no such trappings, it is a completely serious, unflinching, and ligitly disturbing Slasher film.
I like to think of it as the "Henry: Portrait of a serial killer" of Slasher films. Maniac is to the Slasher genre, what Henry was to Serial Killer films. It is the perfect example of a Slasher film, every shot of the film is perfect, the special effects are some of the best best makeup effects ever put in a horror film. Maniac of course has one of the greatest "shotgun blast to head" scenes, Id put it right up there with the one at the end of Dust Devil.

When Bruce and I watched this last night, it was the first time I had ever seen this movie. It was one of those that I had always wanted to see but just never had the chance until last night that is. I must say this, I was not disappointed, usually for me a movie never stands up to the hype and talk that surrounds it once it has become a cult fave, but this was a rare time when it more than surpassed what I expected to see.
The kills were impressive even by today's standards, I think Tom Savini out did himself on this one, espcially with his own death. The whole mommy issue of the killer was refressing in that it's a rarity in a slasher to have a killer where the audience gets to see exactly whats going on in his head. Loved the ending where his victims/demons actually rip him apart from inside his own mind.
