Is it just me or does Leatherface sometimes seem to have gender issues. I mean we see him wearing a woman's skinned face and putting makeup and clothes on before dinner in the original.
Any thoughts? Does Leatherface have some unresolved gender issues or is he just plain insane and as such all bets are off in trying to rationalize his behavior.

Well Ed Gein upon whom Leatherface was based definitely had some mother issues, I think it was along the same lines with Leatherface himself, the death of the mother (seen in the attic) would have been harder on him then the other two brothers, seeing that he is far more demented they they were. I don't think he was ever playing with a full set of cards, and it probably got worse after his mommy died. I don't think its a sexual thing like it was with Ed Gein, he just misses his mommy.

I never thought it was a sexual thing either but more along the lines of Norman Bates, just not to the extent. I always thought he dressed up like that when he was lonely but didn't go so far as Norman did with the whole alternate persona.

Think it was a combination of that and just the need within the family for someone to assume the role of the mothers, to clean and cook etc. Now that I think about it that makes Leatherface even more of a sympathic character, you somehow get the idea that perhaps he would have become a killer if not for the situation he was forced to in. He should have been in an institution for the mentally challenged, which he obviously was, probably makes him even more of a sympathetic character then even Jason.

Yeah I think the famiy had more of an influence on him becoming a killer than Leatherface himself actually having the desire to kill without the influence of others.

He's just a confused and scared little boy, all these people are showing up at the house and he doesn't know where they are coming from, you can see it in the way he scrambles around the house like "Whats going on, where are these people coming from"

In the first film we see Leatherface in three masks
The killing mask ( the primary one)
The Old Woman mask and pretty woman, these masks could mean that he isn't sure what he is. I think Leatherface is confused about his gender and also doesn't understand what gender may be.

It was definitly different with say Norman Bates, he certainly had a sexual identity problem. Anythony Perkins sought of suggested this in one scene. If you look as he walks up the stairs, well, his walk is a little too swishy in the hips. Look for that the next time you see Psycho....not to get too far off topic.
